He
was capped nationally for the Wales B squad
in 1982 and received Caps for Welsh squad
in 1982-1984.
During this period while working for Swalec
Mike sustained an industrial injury which
put an end to his playing career in 1985.
Not one to let injury stop him participating
in his favoured sport Mike started his coaching
career in 1986 for Blaina RFC successfully
taking them to Monmouthshire Premier Champions
1986/87.
He
moved on to coach Cross Keys RFC from 1988-1990
and followed that role with a term coaching
Bective Rangers between 1990 and 1991. He
then joined Swansea RFC and remained from
1991-1997 coaching them to 2 Welsh Championships,
Cup Winners and proudly beating a touring
Australian side
21 –6.
Mike
then went across the water to coach the Irish
side Leinster coaching them to victory in
1997-1998 as Inter Pro’Champions. During
his time in Ireland he also held the posts
of Linout Coach and Coach for the Irish A
squad.
He returned home in 1998 to join and coach
Ebbw Vale and also coach the Welsh A squad.
In 2003/2004 Mike coached the Gwent Dragons
and in May 2004 took up the position of coach
to the Welsh National side.
On
a personal note Mike has been happily married
to Bernadette (Bernie) since 1987 they have
3 children, two sons Ciaran 17, and Rhys 15
and a daughter Katie 11. He plays Golf although
will admit not well, and is also involved
in Weight Training and Cycling to keep his
level of fitness up. To completely relax away
from the world of sport he plays guitar in
a band called ‘Mid Life Crisis'.
